Victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory however long and hard the road may be; for without victory, there is no survival. - Churchill
ANWR. We were so close.
Republicans are going to lose big in '06. The base will stay home. There is no point in having Republicans in power if they refuse to advance conservative causes.

Malkin and ABP have reactions. Here's the story:

House GOP leaders agreed last night to strip plans to permit oil drilling in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and in the offshore continental shelf from a $54 billion budget-cutting measure, probably securing the votes to pass the bill today.

The move is a blow to President Bush, who has made expanded oil exploration a priority since he took office. Lawmakers said the White House applied pressure yesterday to Republicans to save the drilling provisions, especially in Alaska, even wooing conservative Democrats who have steadfastly opposed the GOP budget package.

But the Democrats did not budge, and at least 22 Republicans told the House leadership they would not vote for the sweeping bill unless the drilling provision was removed and they were given assurances that it would not return after House and Senate negotiators hash out a final measure. Even then, several moderate Republicans have said they still would oppose the bill, which would allow states to impose new costs on Medicaid recipients, cut funds for student loans and child support enforcement, trim farm supports, and restrict access to food stamps.

Just pitiful.

It seems the only thing that can reverse this situation is effective presidential leadership. He has a lot to accomplish with his SOTU address in a couple of months-- in terms of setting anew an agenda that is achievable.

The good news for Republicans is that '08 is a long way away. Expectations can't be any lower than they are now. If they'll go back to conservative principles, there's time to turn things around.

Additionally, here's a fearless prediction, the situation in Iraq in the next three years is going to be markedly better than it has been the last year. Kerry will have to change sides once again.

2008 is a long way away, but 2006 isn't. I'm not looking forward to a Democrat-dominated Congress. And it's unnecessary, because they're in react mode right now and don't have anything positive to offer. But I agree it's a real possibility b/c the Republicans are in and they don't seem to be offering much either. We need to go back to Contract with America days. If only Newt hadn't let his personal life get in the way.

I'm not looking forward to a Democrat controlled Congress either, but maybe we'll at least get a veto or two.

Don't get too pessimisstic about '06. A lot can change in a year and usually does, especially when one steps into the voting booth. Nonetheless, Republican control of the levers of federal power has been underwhelming. Bush could help whip the GOP into shape, but won't assert himself. The RINO hypocrisy should be highlighted. They gladly participate in a show trial of oil companines, but want to kill ANWR, which would soak up more big oil profits than any knee-jerk federal overreach. Perhaps deep inside Bush is a RINO himself. Still think it's way too early to hand the Capitol keys to the Dems. Just discovered your blog. Enjoy it.

Thanks, Glenn. I don't think there's any question the Republican party has been co-opted by opportunists (the RINOs). Therefore even if they retain power in '06 what will change? We have got to get back to the principles that got Republicans in power in the first place.
