A terrorist is a terrorist
Bush:
The terrorists in Iraq share the same ideology as the terrorists who struck the United States on September the 11th. Those terrorists share the same ideology with those who blew up commuters in London and Madrid, murdered tourists in Bali, workers in Riyadh, and guests at a wedding in Amman, Jordan. Just last week, they massacred Iraqi children and their parents at a toy give-away outside an Iraqi hospital.
This is an enemy without conscience -- and they cannot be appeased. If we were not fighting and destroying this enemy in Iraq, they would not be idle. They would be plotting and killing Americans across the world and within our own borders. By fighting these terrorists in Iraq, Americans in uniform are defeating a direct threat to the American people. Against this adversary, there is only one effective response: We will never back down. We will never give in. And we will never accept anything less than complete victory.
1. Do you think it's possible that our presence in Iraq has made some of its people resort to terrorism who otherwise wouldn't have done so? Don't forget, our enemies in the WoT are Islamic Fundamentalists, yet Iraq was a secular state, and Saddam himself was an enemy of Islamic Fundamentalism. I'm not saying that makes him good, but it does suggest that the particular brand of terrorism we're fighting probably didn't have much of a presence or foothold in Iraq before we were there.
2. Regarding this: "If we were not fighting and destroying this enemy in Iraq, they would not be idle. They would be plotting and killing Americans across the world and within our own borders." How do you think the non-terrorist Iraqis feel about that? Do you feel that its moral to invade a country with the expressed purpose of attracting terrorists there so that you don't have to deal with them elsewhere?
Yes.
2. How do you think the non-terrorist Iraqis feel about that?
Used.
It is what it is. I don't think we planned to attract terrorists to Iraq in the numbers we did. Now that that's the reality, better to kill them there.
Is this bad for innocent Iraqis? Yes. Was Saddam bad for innocent Iraqis? Yes. Will democracy be better for the next generation of Iraqis rather than having to answer to Uday and Qusay? Yes.
