Victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory however long and hard the road may be; for without victory, there is no survival. - Churchill

In a full-length version of a tape previously broadcast, al-Qaida’s deputy leader called for attacks against Persian Gulf oil facilities and urged insurgent groups in Iraq to unite to drive out American forces, according to a videotape posted on the Internet Wednesday.

...or are we fighting with Iraqi citizens who don’t like how we’ve handled things in Iraq and just want to see us gone?

If this is true, why don't the attacks in Iraq stop? We've done everything we've said so far regarding holding elections so we have to have some cred there. The political will in the US is to get out as soon as possible. The only thing keeping us there is our being attacked. If there were no attacks for six months, we'd declare the place stable and be gone.

The folks fighting us know this. What most of them are against is a democratic Iraq. They're trying to kill the political process. Their chance to control the country is now before freedom takes root.

It could be for any number of reasons, and any one of the people involved may have a different reason or combination of reasons. Maybe they don't really believe that we intend to leave. Maybe they think they can demoralize us and get us to leave more quickly. Maybe they're just very angry that we invaded, and are expressing that anger by attacking us. Maybe, as you said, they don't actually want a democratic Iraq (that still wouldn't define them as "terrorists").

I define a terrorist as someone who intentionally kills civilians as part of a military or political campaign. The insurgents in Iraq fit that definition. No?

Some do, yes. All or most? I'm not so sure, based on those statistics I cited.
