Victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory however long and hard the road may be; for without victory, there is no survival. - Churchill
Too much coverage
Kling:

The health coverage most Americans have is what I call “insulation,” not insurance. Rather than insuring them against risk, most families’ health plans insulate them from paying for most health care bills, large and small.

and...

Real insurance would pay for treatments that are unavoidable, prohibitively expensive, or for illnesses that occur relatively rarely. Instead, insulation reimburses even relatively low-cost services, such as a test for strep throat or a new pair of eyeglasses. Insulation pays for treatment even if it is commonplace or discretionary.

See you this afternoon, after I have my free lunch.

It's like auto insurance that pays for oil changes and tune-ups. And if our auto insurance worked that way our oil changes wouldn't cost $22.95, they'd cost $149.95. But the auto insurance companies would cut deals with the mechanics to reduce the insurance company's reimbursement back to $22.95. But someone coming off the street paying cash would have to pay the inflated rate. It's criminal, but we accept it.

My first real job with health insurance had about three HMOs to choose from and one high-deductible plan ($800 I think). The high-deductible plan was way cheaper so that's what I picked. I never went to the doctor. What did I care about co-pays? However, everyone I knew who I told looked at me like I had lost my mind. That has always stayed with me although I'm not sure of the lesson. People think you get what you pay for? Price shouldn't be a factor when thinking about health?

My parents had dental insurance growing up so we went to the dentist and the office filed the claim. I don't have dental insurance. My kids also go to the dentist, but I pay when we leave. No biggie. Just like any other transaction. I feel no less adequate.
